Bethania Farm was founded in 1994 by Martha Sotomayor just outside the town of Macuelizo. It was named after Bethany where it is said that Jesus went to visit his friends Lazarus, Mary and Martha. It was named that way to symbolise friendship and tranquillity.
The farm has 27 hectares of land and produces about 1800kg of coffee per hectare. It is farmed by just one per permanent worker with a further 70 taken on during harvest season.
This coffee from the farm is a red catuai variety that they grow on a one hectare plot between 1300 and 1400 meters above sea level. This plot has has lots of shade trees in the form of banana trees and other fruit trees over the coffee trees.
This coffee is exploding with tropical fruit flavours of which we picked out pineapple and payaya as the most dominant. After the initial burst these make way for a delightful base of macadamia nuts and dark chocolate.
