The Nyeri region in the south west of Kenya is home to the Ndiaini coffee factory. The cooperative that runs the factory has 1200 registered farmers of which about 400 regularly deliver their coffee cherries to the factory that was built in 1969. These farmers all have very small farms with about 200 coffee trees on average.
These farms primarily grow SL28 and SL34 varietals with some Batian and Ruiru 11 as well. The SL varieties are cultivars originally released by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the 1930s and 40s. They soon became the go-to trees for many growers in Kenya due to their deep root structure, which allows them to maximise scarce water resources and flourish even without irrigation.
This coffee is bursting with juicy and syrupy blackcurrant flavours. These are held on high by the typical lemon zingyness that we know and love about Kenyan coffees and a moreish cola flavour rounds it off delightfully.
