We are super excited to bring you James Hoffmann's Decaf Project
The Decaf project is a first-of-its-kind project to taste the same coffee in its natural form and decaffeinated in three different ways.
If you have ever wondered how coffee is decaffeinated, how the process works and how it affects the flavour, then this is for you.
With only 56 roasters worldwide, and 10 in the UK taking part, we are delighted to be involved with this project
The tasting
James Hoffmann will host a live tasting on his YouTube channel at 3pm GMT on Sunday 15th December. Feel free to join in then or do it at any point after, as the tasting video will remain on his channel.
The Coffee
The coffee is a washed Colombian coffee called La Virgen and is actually one of our cafes' favourites, having had it on offer quite a few times! This comes from farms in the highlands of the Guadalupe municipality. We are not giving away any more on the tasting notes of the coffee as that would spoil some of the magic of the tasting!
What is in the pack
With this tasting pack you will get 4 bags, each containing 50g of coffee. Although these bags all contain the same Colombian coffee, one is in its natural form, and the other three of them have been decaffeinated in different ways.
Bag 1 - La Virgen (non-decaf)
A pure, non-decaf washed coffee that captures the natural essence of Guadalupe’s terroir
Bag 2 - Swiss Water® Decaf
Decaffeinated using the Swiss Water® Process, a gentle, chemical-free method that preserves the coffee’s full flavours while removing caffeine.
Bag 3 - Ethyl Acetate Decaf
Decaffeinated by Coffein Co., this process uses ethyl acetate to create a smooth and rich decaf experience.
Bag 4 - Carbonic Natural Decaf
Decaffeinated using CR3-Kaffeeveredelung’s subcritical CO2 process, this cutting-edge method maintains the integrity and flavour of the original coffee.
We are offering this pack as whole bean or ground suitable for cupping. To get the most out of this tasting experience we would definitely recommend grinding it just before brewing it if that is possible.
With 50g of each version of this coffee you will be able to run the tasting a few times and have a little left for a brew or will be able to do the tasting and make a brew for you and a friend.
Timelines
We have now roasted all the coffee and are going as fast as we can to pack it and send it out. We are aiming to have all current orders out by the end of the 9th, We are a new, tiny roastery so this is a mammoth task for us, hence it taking a bit of time.
Roasting style
We will roast these coffees in a style similar to our usual decaf offering. This is at the lighter end of the espresso roasting spectrum so it would be perfect to use in any filter coffee brewing method you fancy too.
